I thought the 25-2 series with a N prefix was built between 1969 and 1976. My book shows a N plus 6 digit serial number in the 700000 range as 1980. The guns had a name and yours was know as the 38 Military & Police. Serial numbers beginning with an S were produced from 1945 until 1948. In 1945 they started with S811338 and went to 999999 in 1948. Based on your serial number yours was probably late 1947 to early 1948. In 1957 the 38 M&P became the model 10.The original Model 29 was superseded by the Model 29-1 in 1960, with modifications made to the ejector-rod screw. The Model 29-2 replaced it the following year, with one screw that had secured the cylinder-stop spring being deleted. Hi all, doing a little research on a pistol which my wife's uncle is handing down to our son. Its a S&W, 6 shot 22 LR revolver, the right side of the barrel reads "22 LONG RIFLE CTG." All the serial numbers on the underside of the barrel, bottom of hand grip, and backside of the cylinder all match. The SN is: K210537.

I say early 1982 because later the same year, serial numbers went to a 3 letter prefix on all S&W revolvers. The serial number will be on the bottom of the grip frame. Carefully remove the grips and tell us the number there. Will have an N prefix or a three letter prefix.
