One was quite worn, the other was very stiff, both were replaced, noise is gone. The mechanic checked other items on the list, but all were OK. Driving the car home, the steering was tighter, less body roll, but biggest change was the quiet. No clunking. This probably also will explain why the front tyres were so worn while the rears were OK.
