It turned out that propshaft-to-driveline tunnel contact was not the problem on my CTS4; the torque induced vibration/thumping issue on my car was caused by the AWD Transfer Case intermittently 'grounding out' on an underside hard point on the vehicle. The fix was to shim the transfer case crossmember down 1/8" (3 mm).
There have been some timing chain issues with both 3.6L engines.
