They are quite literally looking for a cheat to succeed in the same way that they might try and cheat to pass a test. As social animals, they want to be loved, desired, admired, and relied upon. So they fight for that approval. Patriarchy teaches them that any resource is finite—especially love and respect. Over on Hacker News it was suggested the issue is that men are bullied / shown disgust when they ask for help or show vulnerability. But that doesn't address poor school performance. I suspect the school system is naturally better suited to girls at least to some degree, and those with lower-income already have the cards stacked against them.
