The newer ones (SOHC) used a variant of it, so it shouldn't be too much different. Engine mounts are probably different enough that it won't drop straight in. A lot of the V8 swapped used to as simple as taking a V8 and tranny out of an Explorer and bolting it in the Ranger. Since both trucks also came with the 4.0 OHV it was a pretty seamless swap.
