My 21 Tacoma rear diff went out at 8k so I decided to change my 4Runner as a precaution. My question is should I wait until 50k to change the transfer case and front diff since I hardly put it in 4 wheel ... 2017 T4R TRD Off Road Premium. Did my first oil change at 5500 miles. Did the 2nd one at 13,000 miles...also did the front and rear diff oil at that time as well. Will probably do the next oil change at 20,000 miles. Its's fairly straight forward. undo the fill plug before the drain plug. just do it as cheap insurance. Front and Rear Diff fluid change. Some do it at 30K and 60K. I'm very comfortable performing the Diff and Transfer case service between 60-90K miles. I'm at 60K now on a 2015 Limited and am not in a rush.

so based on my inspect, it's mostly not the axle (wheel ) seals that're leaking. the rear diff fill plug is very dry but the drain plug, well, it's the lowest part there so although it's wet it doesn't prove anything. the pinion seal is hard to tell although it's moist as it's also beneath that dripping "bar".

I swapped all the factory diff fluids to Mobil 1 75w-90 at 30k and am coming up on 60k. I really loathe messing with the diff fluid, it's messy, smelly, and awkward, even with a lift. I think either at 60k or 65k I'm going to refill all 3 diffs with Shell Spirax 75w-90, which is rated for a 500,000 mile drain interval on heavy commercial axles.
