Sep 18, 2007 · The 383 is a bit more radical on the heads/cam combo but it still makes all of the power of the 377 but of course has a ton more low end grunt! The 383 runs the numbers with a 2800-3200 stall and the valvetrain doesn't take a beating. The 377 hit's it's best with @ a 5000 stall and shifts are closer to 7800 vs the 383's 7000 shift point. That's pretty much what we see with the 383 vs. 406 units. Our pump-gas 383's average approximately 475 HP and our 400's come in around 575. The problem basically with the 400's is coming up with cores. Many of our customers opt for the aftermarket blocks on the 400's. These blocks are also worth some add'l HP. Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S.The longer rod gives more duration at tdc and yes you can run higher comp on them if I rember right. yes you have to use special pistons, it allows you to rev higher but I think if any thing it hurts torque. My machinest said more often than not people like the 5.7's more. Around where i live you dont find a 5.3 under 300,000 miles, with that many miles your going to need to rebuild.

Jun 25, 2007 · No SBC is bad. A 383 cost the same to build as a 406 with the only exception being you might have to pay a little more for a 400 block over a 350 block. Put your car on a little diet and with a strong 383 you sould hit your goal pretty easy.
